Ankylosing Spondylitis: Thoracic Pedicle Subtraction Osteotomy (PSO)

Pedicle Substraction Osteotomy (PSO) is the surgical resection of both the pedicles and part of the vertebral body. It produces approximately 30 degrees of correction and can be performed on one or more vertebrae, and is primarily used to correct spinal kyphotic deformity and to improve the sagittal alignment of the spine. With this surgery, pain can be reduced, the patient’s mobility can be improved, and further spinal damage or the development of deformity or deformity can be prevented.

This article records the successful surgical cases performed by Dr. Wong Chung Chek, with Dr. Lee Chee Kean and Dr. Lim Sze Wei assisting. We’ve performed a T7 Pedicle Subtraction Osteotomy and T4-T10 Posterior Instrumented Spinal Fusion. We managed to reduce the thoracic kyphosis from 70 to 45 degrees. We also managed to improve his chin-brow vertical angle from downward 15 degrees to neutral (horizontal gaze) plus ability to look upward 10 degrees.
